NATO countries stage military exercise in Georgia

On September 8 over 2,700 troops from several NATO countries took part in joint military drills in Georgia. The exercise is called "Noble Partner 2020" and will last 11 days. The US says its participation is intended to deepen co-operation with Georgia and other partners.Live fire exercises and the mechanized maneuvers will be undertaken. In 2008 NATO expressed its aspiration to include Georgia in NATO one day. In 2008 Georgia and Russia fought a five-day war. The breakaway Georgian regions of Abkahzia and South Ossetia are recognized as independent countries by Russia. Russian soldiers are in these regions. Russia calls them "peacekeepers". The Georgians call them "occupiers". Russia does not want another NATO country on its border.
