NATO providing air defense to Ukraine

On October 13 it was reported that US and its allies are rapidly giving air defense systems to Ukraine. The recent spate of Russian missile attacks has prompted this. The attacks killed 20 Ukrainian civilians and damaged infrastructure. Ukraine claimed to have shot down almost half of the Russian missiles, but this is widely doubted. 50 countries are providing Ukraine with arms. The air defense will be of multiple ranges and altitudes. It will be able to deal with ballistic and cruise missiles and drones too. Two of the NASAMs air defense systems will be provided. Germany has given an Iris T defense system and will give 3 more in 2023. It can defend a small city. The US is pleading with its allies to hand over air defense systems to Ukraine even if they are old. Spain has answered this call. France is doing likewise and giving radar, too. The UK is giving AMRAAM missiles. It is speculated that a SAMP/T high altitude system will be given by France. This is made by a French-Italian manufacturer. The US wants to convince Israel to sell its iron dome system to Ukraine. Israel is loath to wreck already strained relations with Russia. These systems are expensive and also complex. It takes months to train troops on them. Ukraine is complaining that the military aid announced in October 2022 is not going to arrive for months. The takeaway is that Russia's missile attacks will become less and less effective. The Russian Air Force is hardly used because of increasingly capable Ukrainian air defense.
