NATO Summit does not set a date for Ukrainian membership

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 12 Jul 2023 by Alex Teddy

On July 11 NATO met in Lithuania. The host is a former Soviet state, which is symbolically important. The President of Lithuania was just elected in June 2023. President Nauseda is an outspoken advocate of Ukraine's cause. Zelensky was invited to attend. It is very rare for non-NATO leaders to be present. Zelensky had one-on-one meetings with Biden and others. Zelensky publicly criticized NATO for delaying Ukrainian membership. He was open about wanting an invitation to join NATO but none was given. NATO is preoccupied with getting Sweden to join. Turkey said it will not block Swedish invitation membership. But Turkey could veto Ukrainian membership because of Turkey's delicate relationship with Russia and its desire not to see Russia aid Armenia against Turkey's ally Azerbaijan. All 31 NATO members must approve a new member for that country to be admitted. The NATO Secretary General said that Ukrainian membership is closer than ever and accession is being sped up. The US and Germany are the most cautious about this. Ukrainian membership now could cause World War III. The British Defense Secretary said that Ukraine needs to be more grateful for the weapons being gifted to the country. He said that Ukraine ''is fighting for our freedom'' but there is a limit to what the UK can afford to donate. NATO has to elect a secretary-general for the next term. It looks like Jens Stoltenberg will continue for another term.
