New Attack on Anti-Corruption Bodies, the U.S. Department of State Intervenes

UKRAINE - In Brief 05 Dec 2017 by Dmytro Boyarchuk

We witness new major fight over anti-corruption bodies these days. National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has been extremely effective over the last few months. Arrests reached high profile officials. Among the nosiest cases was the arrest of the son of current Interior Minister, Arsen Avakov, as well as arrests of top officials in the Defense Ministry. NABU’s actions provoked serious resistance among local elites, as now none from establishment can feel safe. And over the last few weeks, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Security Bureau of Ukraine (SBU) made an aggressive attempt to discredit NABU officials: the press reported that NABU officers had been arrested for allegedly provoking the First Deputy Director of the Migration Service for bribery. NABU reported that the Prosecutors Office and SBU had aborted a covert operation and declassified their agents. The scandal has been escalating and the U.S. Department of State intervened with very hash official position. The press-release warned that current aggression of the authorities against NABU “undermine public trust and risk eroding international support for Ukraine”. The scandal is still in progress. Ukrainian authorities have not reacted yet to the statement of the U.S. Department of State. We believe, this new attack on NABU will translate into tightened anti-corruption requirements from the IMF and other donors.
