On May 4 the Kazakh Senate elected a new chairman. Maulen Ashimbaev was elected. He was previously head of the presidential administration. The Chairman of the Senate becomes president if the sitting president dies, resigns or is removed from office. Ashimbaev was elected the same day that he was appointed to the senate. Ashimbaev replaces Dariga Nazarbayeva and his unexpected appointment potentially represents something of a deeper shift away from the former President Nursultan Nazarbayev's traditional circles of influence. That said, Ashimbaev himself has a career track in core state roles and recently spent time as the first deputy chairman of the monolith ruling party Nur Otan. It remains to be seen what level of departure President Tokayev would realistically take from his predecessor, whose influence is still keenly felt throughout the country via multiple circles of influence in state structures and semi-state businesses.
