On December 31 Aurel Ciocoi was appointed acting prime minister. President Maia Sandu was sworn into office only on December 23. The outspoken europhile has called for an early parliamentary election. She has also vowed to defeat corruption.Ciocoi served under the previous president who was pro-Russian. Sandu had to select a PM from among the cabinet. The cabinet is composed of her political opponents. Sandu seeks to capitalize on her electoral honeymoon by holding parliamentary elections now. If her allies win then she will not be forced to have a PM who is unsympathetic to her reformist agenda. It is up to the Constitutional Court to permit the early elections. Some thought the court would block Sandu from becoming president but it did not.
