No sequel to Duterte 1.0?

What is at crucial stake in the forthcoming mid-term election on May 12 in the Philippines is not so much the large number of elective positions, and that is 18,280. It is rather the number of senators that Vice-President Sara Duterte could help land in the magic 12. Led by Speaker Martin Romualdez, first cousin of the President and potential candidate for president himself, the House of Representatives on February 5, 2025 by a vote of 240 out of 316 approved the impeachment bill that would initiate the process of impeaching the Vice-President in the Philippine Senate. The first vice-president to be impeached, Duterte could keep her office until at least two-thirds of the 24 senators, or 16 of them, vote to unseat her. Based on the articles of impeachment, the lower house claimed that Sara Duterte misused public funds, holds unexplained wealth, plotted murder against key officials of the Philippines and betrayed public trust. Senate President Francis Escudero announced to the press that the trial would start in July 2025 after the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA). Impeaching the vice president is fundamental to denying her the opportunity to run for president in May 2028, the next presidential election. The UniTeam of President Marcos and Vice-President Duterte could not be more divided than after Duterte’s father, former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on March 12 on the order of the International Criminal Court (ICC) through the Interpol.
