Turkey exploded in anti-Syrian rage during the week, while Syrians in Turkey-controlled areas of their country retaliated in kind. The politics author does not anticipate more inter-communal violence, but President Erdogan is now desperate to make peace with Assad. The major threat to Erdogan from Syrians and Syria is not public unrest, but voters migrating to the anti-immigration party, Victory. Is peace with Assad possible?

The Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek’s tax package is yet to be submitted to parliament, with hectic efforts by interest groups to dilute it. It is not clear how much of the original plan will survive the floor vote. On the positive side, Erdogan is signaling loudly that he is behind Simsek and the Economic Stabilization Program.
