Opposition wins Presidency of the Assembly

With 96 votes—more than even UNES and the Social Christians expected—Virgilio Saquicela his loyal voice today won the presidency of the Assembly for two more years. This is four more votes than those needed to impeach President Lasso. Seventeen legislators from Packakutik and Izquierda Democratica played the silent game, abstaining from voting. They will most probably take the same position if there is a vote for impeachment. President Lasso has requested the Constitutional Court to oversee that the Assembly follows due process and has assured he will attend the plenary sessions when called. But we believe the above-mentioned result predicts an almost certain impeachment unless there is a miraculous turn of events in the coming weeks. If Lasso has not decided to walk out of office and let Vice President Borrero be the cannon fodder of this voracious majority, cross death is closer by the hour. In any event, we have ahead a lose-lose outcome that will not bring any stability in the ongoing political turmoil.
