Politics: The Paredes, Gálvez contest for the opposition candidacy has strengthened the alliance; the MC remains on the sidelines to date

MEXICO - Report 29 Aug 2023 by Guillermo Valdes and Francisco González

With just over a week to go, the field competing to become the opposition presidential candidate has been narrowed down to a politician of great experience and trajectory who represents the best of the party tradition (the PRI’s Beatriz Paredes), and a fresh and charismatic figure who unites and represents the independent and civil society forces (Xóchitl Gálvez). This has proven to be a fortunate combination for the Broad Front for Mexico (FAM). Paredes is a politician with a great trajectory, decades of experience at the highest levels of government and an unblemished record when it comes to corruption scandals. Thanks to decades of experience in legislative and executive tasks she has developed a comprehensive vision of the country's problems and clear and solid proposals to solve them, widely surpassing Xóchitl Gálvez in this regard. This has forced Xóchitl to work harder to overcome her shortcomings in order to become a more solid candidate when it comes time to square off against Morena. But the nomination is not yet hers.

Regardless of who wins it, both candidates and their backers need one another since in order to defeat Morena it is indispensable that the participating political parties remain united and have the capacity to summon independent voters. In principle, they have laid the bases not only to emerge as a competitive option next June, but even to defeat the official coalition. Ideally, they need to win over the MC, the one party that refuses to commit to the FAM, but some major figures in the party have begun to openly push for such an alliance.
