Perú: Cabinet Reshuffle

Last night, President Boluarte reshuffled her Cabinet and changed three ministers: Minister of Finance, José Arista; Minister of Social Inclusion, Julio Demartini; and Women and Vulnerable Population, Teresa Hernández. For weeks have been rumors of a reshuffle, and most anticipated that Interior Minister Juan José Santivanez, who had been involved in several of Boluarte’s Attorney General investigations, would be one to go. However, she decided to keep him. The new Finance Minister is José Salardi, the former head of Proinversión, the agency responsible for the Public-Private investments. Before he had been at the Transport Ministry and has no previous experience as an economist or in finance. However, he has proved to be an able manager and loyal to Boluarte. The rumor is that for months she had been looking for Arista's replacement, without any luck. We should monitor Salardi’s announcements, but it is risky to appoint someone with so little experience to this ministry in an election year. The risk is that Boluarte pushes him to expand government expenditure.
