Planning secretary resigns

In a wholly unexpected development, Socio-economic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia resigned today from his post, citing personal reasons and “differences in development philosophy with a few of my fellow Cabinet members.” It is not clear at this time what these “differences” are and with whom among his colleagues. Among the economic managers, Secretary Pernia has been the most vocal about the damage to the economy of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), which had earlier been extended to end-April. Secretary Pernia has been advocating for government to allow more businesses to operate, a view we share. Finance Undersecretary Karl Chua, Secretary Dominguez’s right hand, has been named as acting planning secretary. We expect to hear more in the days ahead about the economic team’s ECQ exit plan.
