On October 29 the Polish Parliament approved more than USD 400 million to build the barrier. It says that Belarus is deliberately helping illegal immigrants from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan to cross into Poland. The wall will be 100 km long but that will not cover the whole border. Poland is also sending more troops to its eastern border. On November 3 Poland accused Belarus of sending armed troops across the border. Admittedly this was only a handful and only for a few minutes. Warsaw summoned the Belarusian ambassador. It also accused the Belarusians of firing blanks at Polish troops. The Poles say that Belarus has destroyed some of the razor wire fence that Poland built.Poland has declared a state of emergency. In 2021 over 23,000 people have tried to cross the border illegally. Turkey and Libya have used this strategy. Minsk knows that the EU is struggling to deal with illegal immigrants. The EU has sanctions on Belarus. Lukashenka continues his crackdown. More journalists have been jailed. He has even banned a Russian pro-Kremlin website Regnum. That is because Regnum suggested that Belarus and Russia reunite. Belarus agreed to do so in 1999 but still has not delivered on the promise.Despite the sustained pressure on Lukashenka, Putin's support for him is unstinting. There is no sign that Lukashenka is going to fall.
