Polish protests block Ukrainian exports

On February 20 farmers and truckers stepped up protests to stop Ukrainian food from being brought into Poland. They say they are being undercut by Ukrainian produce and the low wages of Ukrainian truckers. They want limits on Ukrainian food and trucks entering the country. Much of the produce is not sold in Poland but transported on to other EU countries. Kyiv said this will have grave repercussions for Ukraine and Poland alike. Ukraine's interior minister met the chief of the Polish National Security Bureau. The blockade is not intended to stop buses but has the effect of slowing their passage. The blockaders have to move their vehicles aside from time to time to let buses through. Ukraine's economy has shrunk 30% since 2022. It is exporting grain via the Black Sea, but this is risky. Not nearly as much is exported by sea as before the war. Ukraine has had to increase overland exports. Ukraine urgently needs money because financial support from the US is not coming.
