Polluting factory in Russian North to be closed

A Nornickel factory in Nikel, Murmansk Region will be shut. It emits 80 000 tons of sulfur dioxide as well as other dangerous gases each year. The nickel producing factory is to Norway. The Norwegians have repeatedly complained about it. There is acid rain on the taiga forest on the Kola Peninsula due to the factory.On December 25 the factory must close. The workers have been guaranteed new jobs. They will work in customer service and equipment.Nickel production will be transferred to Monchegorsk. Mining in Zapolyarny will continue.Nornickel CEO Vladimir Potanin announced in 2019 that the plant would close. There are 800 workers there.Some people in the town of Nikel think their town will be ruined. The nickel plant employed most of the population. Tourism is offered as an alternative industry but does not seem to be viable. Apartments are now on sale in the town for USD 1300. The nickel factory will be knocked down by 2025.Nornickel has other plants in Murmansk and in the Taimyr Peninsula.
