Danilo Medina has been reelected as President of the Dominican Republic with 62% of the votes, according to preliminary data from the Junta Central Electoral (central board of elections). Challenging candidate Luis Abinader received 35% of the votes. Guillermo Moreno received almost 2% of the votes. The rest of the candidates (5 in total) reached all together 1%. The data correspond to Bulletin No. 2 of the board of elections, accounting for 1.9 million votes (out of 6.76 million registered), and 42% of total electoral colleges (6,811 out of 16,070). Major pollsters proved to be on target with respect to Presidential elections. Results of the elections for Congress and municipal authorities are still being processed. Although President Medina’s PLD won the election in both levels, will retain control of the Senate and the Lower House, and will win the majority of the local elections, the party will lose some ground. Currently, PLD holds 31 out of 32 Senate seats, and the one not in control of them is held by an allied party. It looks that opposition parties will win 3-4 seats in the Senate. In addition, PLD’s Roberto Salcedo, major of Santo Domingo (the capital city) lost the bid for reelection to PRM’s candidate David Collado. More details are coming soon.
