President of Armenia resigns

On January 23 Armen Sarkisian resigned in a shock move. The presidency is a mainly symbolic office. Sarkisian expressed his frustration that he was not able to do more, especially considering the difficulties his country has been through 2020.The 69-year-old had openly criticized Prime Minister Pashinian. The defeat by Azerbaijan wrecked their relationship. Sarkisian was not allowed to negotiate with Azerbaijan. He also disliked Pashinian firing some senior army officers.Sarkisian believes the constitution should be amended to enhance the office of the president. He has been in office since 2018 and was up for re-election in 2005.It is uncertain who takes over the presidency. There has to be election within 35 days if the position is not filled.
