On April 10 the state visit took place. The two countries have agreed to make the most of the Trans Caspian International Transport Route. It is also known as the Middle Corridor. This agreement means improving port technology and simplifying tariffs. The two nations are on opposite shores of the Caspian. Other countries such as China and Turkey are keen to see the Middle Corridor succeed. The aim is to increase its capacity to 10 million tons of freight per annum by 2025. China sends 96% of its exports by sea. It is keen to increase land transportation. It would like to avoid the Northern Corridor, which goes through Russia. The Middle Corridor is 2,000 km shorter. Ports on the Middle Corridor are Baku, Aktau and the Turkmen Port of Turkmenbashi. In 2022 trade between the two nations was USD 600 million. That was a major increase compared with 2021.
