President Zuma's High Risk Road

SOUTH AFRICA - In Brief 30 Mar 2017 by Iraj Abedian

Earlier this evening, at around 19h00, President Zuma convened an emergency meeting of the ANC Top 6, he called a number of ministers to stand by too. This is the strongest sign so far that he may have made up his mind to take the high risk road after all. If he reshuffles, both Minister of Finance and his deputy will be dismissed.Earlier today, the SA Communist Party held a press briefing in which much details were shared about the President's consultation with the Party, and on his intention to axe both Minister Pravin Gordhan and his Deputy Minister, Mcebisi Jonas. It is expected that with this reshuffle, as many as 9 ministers may be also axed. What remains uncertain and at this point in time unknown is the likely response of Deputy President Ramaphosa. Will he resign in protest? Only a few hours ago, all indications were that the ANC had pushed back Zuma to reflect on his next course of action. The ANC insiders believed he would not take any actions until the middle of April! Clearly, in response to the mounting pressures, President Zuma has decided to take the high risk road. The likely impact on the economy could be wide and deep, and prolonged.we are watching the developments, and will update as the story unfolds...
