Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva Resigns

President Martin Vizcarra accepted the resignation of the president of the council of ministers (also referred to as Premier or Prime Minister) Cesar Villanueva this afternoon. It is rumored that his resignation was prompted by Minister of Finance Carlos Oliva's disagreement on the way that a truckers' strike was resolved. The government had given in to the truckers' demand for an excise tax on diesel to be rolled back. The most likely reason is probably the drop in Vizcarra's popularity. Recent polls also revealed generalized dissatisfaction with the performance of several cabinet members. When the Premier resigns all cabinet members have to submit their resignation letters and a new cabinet is formed (ministers can be reappointed). It is unclear whether Minister Oliva will remain in the new cabinet.
