Problems with the 2012 census confirmed

The National Statistics Institute (INE) received yesterday the report with the evaluation of the 2012 census by a committee of independent experts. This committee was created after a journalistic investigation center revealed errors and inconsistencies in the 2012 census (now being investigated by judicial courts). According to the committee of experts, the omission rate (the fraction of families not counted) would be higher than 9% at the national level. More over in some regions the omission rate could be 20%. Given the importance of the census in the elaboration of public policies, the committee recommended the government to do a new census. The government announced yesterday that it is going to request the opinion of international institutions with expertise in these issues to have a second opinion.
