Protestors block Ukrainian trucks from entering Romania

On January 18 2024 the truckers and farmers stopped Ukrainian trucks entering the country. They did this at all three crossings between Romania and Ukraine. The protests are about subsidies paid to farmers, forgiving loans and the fact that so many Ukrainian trucks are coming that it slows down Romanians who want to come and go. On January 19 the situation at one crossing, Vicovu de Sus, was resolved. Traffic is now normal there. The other two crossings points remain partly blocked. Romania is a NATO and EU country. It has taken in Ukrainian refugees.  Exporting goods overland is vital for Ukraine because the Black Sea is not a safe export route. Nonetheless, since the end of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Ukraine has managed to increase its grain exports by sea to not far off pre-war levels.
