In Khabarovsk people have been taking to the streets for weeks to demonstrate against the arrest and dismissal of their governor. Sergei Furgal was fired on July 10 and charged with ordering two murders in 2005.Furgal belongs to the Liberal Democratic Party. He has been replaced by Putin with a member of the same party. The new governor has no previous connection to the region. The leader of the Liberal Democrats has taken the rare step of publicly denouncing Furgal's arrest.Tens of thousands of people attended a major protest march. There are daily protests but numbers are slowly diminishing. The police have arrested a handful of people.The government is being uncharacteristically restrained. Putin seems to recognise that clamping down would be counterproductive.
