Purge of Russian Army

Since April 2024, 5 top military officials have been arrested. On May 23 the deputy chief of the general staff was arrested. Lieutenant General Shamarin headed the communications directorate. He has been accused of major corruption dating back to 2016. On the same day a high ranking procurement bureaucrat in the Ministry of Defense was arrested on suspicion of misuse of power. The conviction rate is over 99%. It could be that the authorities genuinely care about corruption, but bribe-taking is widespread in Russia. It is possible that they are being penalized for incompetence. Corruption was endemic in the Russian military in the early Putin years. It declined a lot but seemed to be tolerated as long as it was not flagrant. Because a war is now being fought, the government has decided to eliminate military corruption because it makes victory harder to achieve.  The new Defense Minister, Belousov, formerly worked in economic roles. He is also perceived to be a more hawkish politician than his predecessor and was in fact in favor of the war while other senior leaders were non-committal.
