On October 14 President Putin flew to Saudi Arabia. This is his first visit to the kingdom since 2006. Russia's energy minister Alexander Novak and the head of the sovereign wealth fund accompanied the president. Putin met with 300 business leaders from both countries. Various agreements were signed on petrochemicals, AI and transport. Some Russian investors are excited by Aramco's possible IPO. Gazprom wants to co-operate with the Saudis on gas. Russia sells wheat to Saudi Arabia and is eager to increase food sales to the country.Russia has managed to retain cordial relations with Saudi Arabia despite also being friendly with Saudi Arabia's foes. This is a major diplomatic achievement. Iran and Israel are at daggers drawn but both have good relations with Russia. Russia is a key ally of the Syrian Government that the Saudis wanted to overthrow.There has been talk of Saudi purchasing S-400 missile defense systems from Russia. Washington strongly opposes this. Saudi Arabia needs US help against Iran and therefore has refrained from buying the S-400.The President flew to the UAE on October 15.
