Putin meets Syrian President

On July 15 President Assad was in Moscow. The two presidents spoke about the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Syria has been a Russian ally since the 1960s and is a deadly enemy of Israel. Syria has a difficult relationship with its neighbor Turkey. Russia is playing the honest broker between Turkey and Syria. Turkey is the only NATO country not to impose any sanctions on Russia. Turkey badly needs Russian trade and tourists for its struggling economy. The President of Turkey proposed a meeting between himself, Putin and Assad to resolve various disagreements.  Turkey once wanted Assad to be overthrown. It even intervened militarily in the Syrian Civil War in 2016. Turkey is hosting millions of Syrian refugees and wants them to return home. The Syrian Civil War started in 2011. Russian military support has been vital in keeping Assad in power. Russia was eager to maintain its naval base in Syria, which is its only one abroad. President Assad spent a year training with the Soviet Army in the 1980s and speaks basic Russian.
