Putin plans referendum for July 1

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 03 Jun 2020 by Alex Teddy

On June 2 Putin said that a referendum on constitutional reform will be held on July 1. This was originally scheduled for April but had to but had to be postponed owing to coronavirus. The reforms proposed would allow the president to serve a further two terms. This would allow him to remain in office until 2036 if he is re-elected twice.Putin is keen to move on from coronavirus. It has hit his popularity badly. Some think it is rash to hold the referendum in July because coronavirus is still spreading albeit at a slower rate. Coronavirus has prevented protests. That is good for the government. No government has ever lost a referendum. In the highly improbable event of the proposal being voted down then the president shall retire in 2024.People will have their temperature checked at polling stations. Doesn't that suggest it is unwise to hold the referendum? The public is apathetic about the referendum. Online voting might be held in some regions.Civil advocacy group 'Golos' said the referendum will be rife with bogus voting.A delayed Victory Day Parade will be held on June 24 . Putin presumably think this will work wonders for his popularity.
