On December 14 he held his annual press conference cum phone-in. In theory, members of the public call in and they are randomly selected to speak to the president live on air. The 2023 edition was not as masterful as those of several years ago.  Putin said that the war would go on until Russia accomplished its stated aims of regime change, the demilitarization of Ukraine and keeping Ukraine out of NATO permanently. He said he was still open to talks with Ukraine. He insisted that Russia's strategic position in Ukraine is improving.  The Russian president claimed there are 617,000 Russian troops in Ukraine so there is no need for another draft. He blamed the war on NATO's encroachment. Putin hinted that he would like to see Trump come back saying that ''when internal changes happen they start respecting other countries.'' He said that Americans in Russian jails could be sent home if the US made concessions. The President expressed disappointment that Israel shall now permit now permit establishing a hospital in Gaza.  Putin claimed that GDP in Russia has grown 3.5% in 2023 but admitted that inflation in almost 8%.
