On August 23 Russian state media reported that Sergei Surovikin was dismissed. Surovkin was the head of the space forces. Surovikin disappeared after the June 2023 mutiny by the Wagner Group. The Kremlin said in late June 2023 that Surovikin was ''resting''. There has been no word of him since then. It is suspected that Surovikin was aware of the mutiny but did not participate partly because he may have realized that the FSB heard about the conspiracy before it swung into action. But Surovikin appeared in a video the day of the mutiny telling Wagner fighters not to march on Moscow. Victor Afzalov has been appointed to replace Surovikin. Surovikin interfaced with Wagner for some years before he was dismissed. He is the one who had the strategy of breaking Ukrainian morale by destroying the energy infrastructure. He also convinced Putin to allow a withdrawal from Kherson.
