Putin visits Vietnam

On June 20 Putin arrived in the country for the fifth time. He met the Vietnamese President. Russia likes to prove that it has cordial relations with some countries despite the Ukraine War. Vietnam is neutral on the war. Vietnam sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine. There is a small Vietnamese community in Ukraine. Vietnam is not a Russian ally but neither is it hostile to Russia. The Soviet Union was vital in enabling Vietnam to defeat the United States in the 1970s. Putin emphasizes that Russia is the main successor state to the Soviet Union. Some Vietnamese politicians even studied in Russia. In the 1990s Vietnam turned to the West and embraced capitalism. Vietnam does not trade much with Russia. However, the military still uses Russian equipment. Russian oil companies are helping Vietnam prospect for oil in the South China Sea.
