Putin willing to talk peace in return for land

On January 5 the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the president is open to negotiations with Ukraine if Ukraine cedes the regions that Russia has seized. The statement came as part of the record of what Putin said in a phone call with his Turkish equivalent. Turkey wants a ceasefire and this will lead to negotiations to end the war. Russia said the West had exacerbated the war by arming Ukraine and claimed that the West helped Ukraine with targeting. Western countries deny that latter allegation. Putin and Erdogan talked about ending sanctions on Russian food, fertilizer and other exports. Western countries are phasing out imports of Russian oil and gas. There is no indication that Ukraine will agree to talk with these preconditions. Kyiv has said it shall never cede any land to Russia. It demands total Russian withdrawal before peace talks begin.Â
