QATAR: White House visit provides boost amidst regional boycott

The US is Qatar’s most important partner, commercially and politically. Qatar is also surprisingly important to the US, as evidenced by the Emir’s recent high profile reception. Strong US support bolsters Qatar, which is being boycotted by several neighbors. Trump is now very clearly on side, after a policy wobble in 2017, but this is unlikely to catalyze an end to the Gulf dispute. Qatar faces material risks from US-Iran tensions, which it is trying to de-escalate. Bilateral relations span the energy sector, US exports, large Qatari investments in the US, aviation, and military and geopolitical cooperation.
