As expected, Hurricane María did not hit directly the DR territory but dropped massive amount of water in the East and Northeast of the country. The damages are well beyond expectations. Severe flooding have ocurred in densily populated areas of Duarte, María Trinidad Sánchez, El Seybo, La Altagracia and Santiago. 26 out of 32 provinces are still in "red alert". Near 16,500 people have been evacuated from their homes, and 3,000 homes have been damaged. In these areas, many have lost all their personal properties (appliances and furniture).Power supply have been affected, and several bridges have collapsed due to extremely powerful water currents. In Santo Domingo and the Punta Cana/Bavaro area (with more than 60% of total hotel rooms), damages have been very limited. It seems neither tourism nor industrial production will be affected. Impact on agriculture (and food prices) remains to be seen. Damages are likely to change fiscal prospects for the rest of 2017. We'll get back to that in upcoming monthly and quarterly reports.
