Reconciliation talks with Kurds pick up pace
The politics author attempts to tell the convoluted story of how President Erdogan and his partner Mr. Bahceli are planning to achieve their ultimate aim of securing eligibility for the former for a third run at the presidency. It is going to be through a new Constitution. With all opposition parties flatly rejecting the idea of a new Constitution or granting Erdogan a third term, the only hope is to cut a deal with the pro-Kurdish DEM Party.
But the Messrs. Erdogan-Bahceli duo needs to jump through a mass of hoops before even getting to constitutional talks. The first step is former PKK leader Ocalan urging PKK to disband. The second step is to end the Syrian Kurdish dreams of autonomy, one way or another. If these intermediate goals can be reached, Turkish voters’ aversion to Erdogan dealing with DEM Party will dissipate, allowing him to formally initiate negotiations on a new constitution.
