Romanian jets scrambled due to drone attacks in Ukraine

On July 24 the fighter aircraft flew because the Russian drones came within 300 meters of the Romanian border with Ukraine. Fragments of destroyed Russian drones have fallen on Romania many times since the war began in 2022. Romania is a NATO and EU country. It hosts a major US Air Force base. Almost a million Ukrainian refugees have moved to Romania since 2022, although all but 90,000 have left. Most of them moved to richer countries to the west. Romania has mixed feelings about the Ukraine War. Romania disputes Snake Island with Ukraine. Some Romanians are nostalgic for communism and amicable relations with Moscow. But they also sympathize with Moldova and fear that Romania could be invaded by Russia. Moldova was once part of Romania. All Moldovans can claim Romanian citizenship. Some Romanians want to absorb Moldova again. Part of Moldova called Transnistria has been under Russian occupation since 1991 is a breakaway unrecognized state.
