On August 20 the CEO of Rosneft met Putin. Igor Sechin presented him with a vial of Arctic oil. The Zapadno-Irkinsky Field's oil has only 0.02% sulfur Sechin claimed. This makes it among the world's purest. This field is part of a planned major oil project with Vostok Oil. If it goes ahead it will require 2 000 km of main pipeline, 7 000 km of branch pipeline, 3 airports, 10 helipads, 50 ice class tankers and a large port on the Kara Sea. The Sever Oil Terminal on the west of the Taimyr Peninsula will be built if the project goes ahead. It would handle a maximum of 115 million tons of oil per annum by 2030. Sever would be fully functional by 2024. The aim is to use the Northern Sea Route. 80 million tons would be shipped by this route annually.Vostok Oil has reserves of 5 billion tons of light quality oil - Sechin claimed. The aim is to pump 25 million tons a year until 2024 and 50 million tons a year til 2027 and finally 115 million a year from 2030 on. There are 17 fields in Taimyr. Rosneft runs it in conjunction with BP. Rosneft is also drilling in the Kara Sea. Rosneft previously prospected there with ExxonMobil. Shallow water and icebergs have proved to be problematic.Sechin previously overpromised about oil in the Laptev Sea. Some are skeptical about his prognostications for Taimyr and the Kara Sea.
