Russia acclaims Myanmar coup

On February 17 Moscow voiced its approval of the new military regime in Myanmar (Burma). China by contrast has registered its anxiety about the situation. There is unrest in Myanmar since Aung San Suu Kyi was deposed. Defense Minister Shoigu visited Myanmar days before the coup d'etat. He was rumored to be there to finish a deal on the sale of drones, SAMs and radar to Myanmar. Russian armored vehicles were recently imported by Myanmar. Since the coup, Myanmar has approved Sputnik V.Russia has described the putsch as an internal matter and opposes any sanctions.General Ming Aung Hliang is the junta chief and he wishes to curry favor with Russia. He fears being too much under the thumb of China. This is yet another sign that the relationship between Moscow and Beijing is more adversarial than the former admits.
