Russia accuses Azerbaijan of using Syrian rebels

On September 30 Moscow said that Azerbaijan has used rebels from Syria and Libya to fight against Armenia. Russia is very troubled by this. The fighters are said to be Sunni extremists whom Russia finds outrageous. Moscow described these people as terrorists. This statement echoes Armenian statements.Baku vehemently denied the accusation. It is a sign of how far relations have deteriorated that Russia has leveled such an accusation.Russia tries to maintain cordial relations with Azerbaijan despite Russian troops being in Armenia. However, Turkey's support for Azerbaijan is so fervent at the moment that Russia can no longer stay friendly with the Azerbaijanis. Moscow has stopped short of accusing Turkey of involvement in moving Syrian and Libyan rebels to Azerbaijan despite Turkey being intimately involved with such rebels. Russia does not want to damage relations with Ankara overmuch.
