On January 30 a Moscow installed bureaucrat named Denis Pushilin in Donetsk said that Russia has taken land around Vuhledar. But he said that Ukrainian resistance is fierce in Vuhledar. The town is 93 km south of Bakhmut which Russia intent on taking. Russia appears to want to do a pincer movement on Bakhmut. Pushilin said the city will not be taken soon. Although the Russians are advancing it is only slowly and at considerable cost. However, Ukrainian retreat might suddenly turn into a rout. On January 30 Zelensky said the situation was very hard for Ukraine in the Donetsk Region. Ukrainians have said that Russia is sending barely trained draftees in human wave attacks. This identifies Ukrainian positions and allows professional Russian soldiers to engage them. The Russians appear to be relying on numerical superiority. Russia will want to begin a full offensive in the spring before Western tanks arrive in Ukraine.Â
