Russia and Belarus discuss unity

On September 11 the Kremlin said that Putin and Lukashenka will discuss unification on September 13. In 1999 Belarus and Russia signed a treaty agreeing to reunite eventually. Russia has been frustrated at Belarussian foot dragging on the issue.Now that Lukashenka is desperate for support he is willing to at least discuss unity with Russia. Only a few months ago he scorned the very suggestion. He is going to visit Sochi to meet his Russian analogue. Energy and trade projects will be on the agenda. Belarus received cut price Russian energy for decades. With Belarus facing sanctions it needs Russian largesse more than ever. No signed agreements are expected at the Sochi meeting. Even Svetlana Tvikhanouskaya, who claims to have defeated Lukashenka in the presidential elections, says her country will remain a friend of Russia.
