Russia and Ukraine exchange prisoners

On July 18 the two warring nations each received 95 Prisoners of War (POW) back. Both governments confirmed the exchange took place. There was also an exchange in June 2024. There have been 54 exchanges since the start of the war. The corpses of soldiers have also been exchanged.  One of those sent back to Russia was a Kyrgyz who had served in the Russian Army. In a way it is surprising that Russia agreed to receive him and consider him worth releasing a Ukrainian for. Central Asians who serve in the Russian Army often complain that they are treated as though they are inferior. The UAE mediated the latest exchange of POWs. The Emiratis are trusted by both sides. The Ukrainians who came home appeared to be malnourished. Ukraine likes to show images of liberated soldiers: seeing it as a success to bring them home. Russia de-emphasizes receiving back its troops. Russia's view is that soldiers should never surrender. Ukraine claims to have gotten back over 3,400 people since the start of the war, some of whom are civilians.
