On August 2 Izmail on the River Danube was struck by Russia. Exporting Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea now seems impossible. Ukraine wants to export more along the River Danube, which flows all the way from Germany. Russia has already attacked the Port of Odessa. Ukraine said the grain facilities struck were due to export grain to African countries, China and Israel. The Romanian president denounced the attacks, which came very close to the Romanian Border. On August 2 the Turkish president urged Putin not to ramp up tensions. Turkey has a better relationship with Russia than any other NATO country. Turkey had benefited from the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI). West Ukraine has minimal air defense. Until now it has hardly needed it. Kyiv on the other hand is strongly defended. An attack by 10 Russian drones on August 2 led to all 10 being destroyed and minimal damage on the ground. Russia is mostly using Iranian-made drones because it cannot produce enough itself. But Ukraine does not have enough air defense to protect the whole country. The Russian strikes are perilously close to Romania. The chances are that if the bombardment persists, Russia will accidentally hit Romania. If Ukraine shoots down a Russian drone the debris might land on Romania. Moscow might not be unhappy about hitting Romania. It would be a warning to Romania and to NATO in general not to support Ukraine. It is unclear what NATO will do if Russia munitions hit Romania. 33 millions tons of grain were exported through the BSGI in 12 months. Ukraine will not be able to export anything like that much through alternative routes such as the Danube even if Russia does not bombard Danube ports. B...
