Russia bans Japanese seafood

On October 16 Moscow announced the move. China did so a few days earlier. The ostensible reason is that Japan released waste water from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant into the sea. The plant was the scene of a disaster in 2011. Japan is very safety conscious and insists that releasing the water into the sea is safe. The United Nations confirmed that it is. It is speculated that the ulterior reason for Russia's ban on Japanese seafood is a bid to appease China and North Korea. North Korea has no diplomatic relations with Japan and is extremely anti-Japanese. China is unhappy with Japan for its tacit support of Taiwan. The Russian ban on Japanese seafood is temporary. It is largely symbolic as Russia buys only USD 1.7 million of Japanese seafood per annum. Russia used to have cordial relations with Japan. Since the Ukraine War relations have become frigid. Japan backed the Ukrainian position, and the Japanese Prime Minister visited Kyiv in 2023. Japan sanctioned some Russian exports in 2022.
