Russia blocks 81 media outlets

On June 25 Russia announced that it was doing this. The media outlets are based in 25 of the 27 EU member states. Moscow did this because in May 2024 the EU banned several Russian newspapers and TV channels. The European Union said it did this because these outlets are controlled by the Russian state, either directly or indirectly and propagate pro-war misinformation. The European Union denounced the move saying it curtails access to the media. Censorship is prohibited under the Russian Constitution. However, censorship is practiced in multiple areas such as if the government says that some statements are disseminating hatred. The Kremlin will consider it good that the public has less access to media that undermine the official narrative on Ukraine.
