Russia building closer relationship with Serbia

Billboards have appeared across Belgrade hailing the Russian Foreign Minister as, ''the world's greatest diplomat''. Russia is keen to underscore the similarities between itself and Serbia. Both are Orthodox Christian, Slavic and former socialist countries. Both have clashed with the West since the 1990s. Serbia is one of the only European countries not to sanction Russia. There are flights from Russia to Serbia. Russian passengers change planes in Serbia and from there fly on to the rest of the world. Yandex has set up in Serbia and so have over 1,000 Russian companies in 2022. Many of these are IT companies. Russians are moving to Serbia. Russians can stay in Serbia for 30 days without a visa. Some companies have moved everyone to Serbia. It is estimated that 50,000 Russians have moved to Serbia since March 2022. 50% of Serbs believe that NATO is responsible for the Ukraine War. Putin is popular in Serbia. Russia supports Serbia's position on Kosovo. Some Westerners see Serbia as facilitating the evasion of sanctions. Sputnik news has also set up office in Serbia. It is banned in the EU. RT is also in Serbia. Serbia aspires to join the EU. If this is going to happen then it needs to distance itself from Russia.
