RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 12 Aug 2020 by Alex Teddy

On August 11 Putin announced that Russia has licensed a vaccine against COVID-19. He said that his daughter has taken it and experienced only slight side effects. Russia has the 4th highest number of coronavirus cases in the world. Foreign experts are skeptical that the vaccine is safe and reliable considering it was produced faster than anywhere else. Gamaleya Research Institute produced the vaccine in conjunction with the Defense Ministry. The Russian Development and Investment Fund put USD 550 000 into it. The vaccine was tested on 176 people in two trials in June and July. Phase 3 trials of the vaccine on thousands of volunteers have started in Saudi Arabia, the Philippines and the UAE, WHO regards this vaccines as still being in Phase 1. This vaccine is a viral vector vaccine. This means it gives part of the pathogen to the body and allows the body to develop an immune response. The vaccine is an injection based on the common cold. The scientists who developed the vaccine have taken it. It is also claimed that leading politicians and business executives have taken it but they have not been named. Some experts are doubtful about this vaccine. Its development seems too hasty. Were the scientists told they had to beat the world even if the scientific data was unsure? The vaccine is due to be available to the general public on January 2021. Vaccinations of healthcare workers are due to begin in August 2020.It is claimed that 20 countries have ordered the Russian vaccine. These countries have not been named.
