Russia claims to have taken Bakhmut

On May 20 the head of Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin said his fighters have control of the city. The Russian Army confirmed this. They have been fighting there since August 2022. Wagner Group said they had stopped taking prisoners. Wagner said it would hand the city over to the Russian Army on May 25. Putin congratulated his forces on taking the city. Zelensky maintains that Ukraine is fighting on in Bakhmut, and its men are advancing to the north and the south of the city. He said the city has been leveled. The US is said to have privately advised Ukraine to withdraw from Bakhmut months ago. Ukraine considered it worth holding the city in order to bleed Russia white. Moreover, it bought time for Ukraine to receive arms and train for its counteroffensive. It has been frustrating and demoralizing for Russia to spend 9 months and lose thousands of lives to take an unimportant city. There is no doubt Russia will take Bakhmut if it has not done so already. The question is will Russia continue to advance? Or is it exhausted for the time being? And when and where will the Ukrainian counter-offensive come? Most believe Ukraine will attack south towards the Sea of Azov to break the land bridge from Russia to Crimea. There have been Russian missile strikes in other cities.
