Russia ends mobilization

On October 28 Russia said it was no longer calling up reservists. In September 2022 Russia called up 460,000 reservists. The Defense Ministry said its target has been reached. The mobilization was supposed to be of men aged 18-35 who had undergone military training already. Even Putin admitted that mistakes were made and men over this age and who had no military training were sometimes drafted. The government said that some state employees were drafted. There had been a rumor that such men were unfairly exempt. Moscow claimed that 13,000 other men had volunteered. Russia is trying to persuade Central Asian guest workers to volunteer. Central Asian countries have threatened jail for anyone who does this. 82,000 reservists have already reached the frontline, said the Defense Ministry. The rest are still being trained. The mobilization caused much disquiet. There were protests, and hundreds of thousands of young men left the country. Continuing the mobilization would have done more harm than good.Â
