Russia expels 12 US diplomats

On March 23 Moscow made the move in reprisal for the US expelling 12 Russian diplomats who worked at the UN. The United States expelled the Russians three weeks ago, so the Russian response was a surprisingly long time in coming. The US called the move unjustified. Notably, Russia did not accuse the Americans of activity incomaptible with diplomatic status (i.e., spying). The row is yet another sign of how bad relations have become. Putin wondered aloud about breaking off diplomatic relations with the US. This was not done even at the worst moments in the Cold War.
