Russia fails to regain seat on UN Human Rights Council

On October 10 the vote was held in the UN General Assembly. Russia was voted off it in March 2022. Russia won 83 votes out of 193, which is better than anticipated. Its votes probably came almost exclusively from the Global South. Western countries cited a missile attack on Groza, Ukraine, that Kyiv says killed 50 civilians as a reason to vote against Russia. The seat on the UNHRC is for the 2023-26 term. Bulgaria won the seat. Bulgaria was a communist country and had cordial relations till recently but is a NATO and EU member that has armed Ukraine. There are 47 countries on UNHRC. China is one of them. Russia wanted a seat on UNHRC because it allows Russia a megaphone with which to talk about Western human rights abuses. Joe Biden brought the US back into UNHRC. Trump had removed the US from it arguing it was anti-Israel.
